Like most people, my desk at work is a mess. Crumbled up paper, a few stray pens and empty tea cups scatter my desk. I’d like to say though that’s it’ not my fault, as the rest of the office in Adelaide is crying out for professional office cleaning. Whilst I like to shift the blame, I read a startling statistic that made be squirm at my messy desk. Apparently it has been revealed that 57 per cent of workers admit to judging a coworker about the cleanliness of their workspace. Almost half of these people admitted to being “appalled” by a dirty office. Now if you’re like me and are a bit lazy when it comes to cleaning your office space, these tips will hopefully kick you into shape.
The first thing you need to ask yourself is, what do I want from my office space? Then you must reflect if your current workspace is reflecting this need. In most cases, unless you’re a perfectionist, your need will not be met so it’s time to take action. It may sound over the top, but you need to set up zones for your daily work functions. This is less complicated than it sounds, I promise! So, say if you need a computer, you work out where that goes. You may also need a sport to organize your pens and other stationary, plus a spot for all your notes and filling. These main needs will require a special zone and will be the basis of your new workspace layout.
Cut back on the crap on your desk. A rule to follow is, only have things that you need right away in radius of your arms. Cut the clutter and only keep the essentials, which generally is your computers, telephone, one pen and notebook. You can keep the other stuff, like your favourite mug and that weird skull stationary thing you got from Typo, in areas further away that are designated for these not so important items.
While we all still dream about the paperless office, it still is not attainable. Despite working off computers, there is always paperwork spread around. In order to keep on top of the paperwork, purchase baskets or hanging files to store the paperwork away. Utilise a labeled system that allows you to keep track of the progress and the location of the paperwork. This will help you not feel so overwhelmed with paperwork and allow you to keep track of it, so you don’t forget it.
It was a groundbreaking moment when I was advised of this next rule; the issue isn’t space, it’s too much stuff. This notion really hits home for me on so many levels of my hoarder lifestyle, however, I digress. The point is, be hard on yourself. If you have a bookshelf, then that is it. Once it gets full, it’s time to throw something out if you want something else on it.
So, there you have it some sure fire ways to keep your workspace tidy. That way you won’t have any rude co-workers thinking you’re a pig because you have a couple of old coffee cups and papers sitting around.
